Franklin On Ice - Music Performance

Franklin is cool, but it’s about to get even cooler during Franklin On Ice Weekend.

The main event will happen Saturday, February 6, when DiMartino Ice Professional Carvers will transform lifeless blocks of ice into beautiful works of starting at 10 a.m. in Fountain Park. Carvers will be working until 2:30 p.m. Spectators are welcome to watch the work in progress and bring cameras for numerous photo opportunities. A 30-minute timed competition will be held at 3 p.m. where spectators can vote for their favorite sculpture.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ice carving festival that started as a sanctioned National Ice Competition Association (NICA) event sponsored by the former Franklin Club. The club's manager, Daryl Dzieksiasz and Randy Rupert (chef and pro ice carver) managed the event in 1996. The NICA sanctioned event was huge and brought in carvers from across the nation. Rupert had gained notoriety after he was hired by the directors of the movie Groundhog Day to sculpt the carvings used in the movie.

In 1998, the Franklin Fine Arts Council (FFAC) took over the event and many events and attractions have been added to the schedule over the years. Doug Suhr has added the lighting of the statues at night. This lighting of the ice sculptures has been copied throughout many cities in PA.

This year downtown retailers will be joining in the celebration by holding Indoor Sidewalk Sales with prices slashed up to 50% on Friday, February 5, and Saturday, February 6. Folks can participating stores to play Kool Kash Bingo for a chance to win Franklin Retail & Business Association gift certificates. There is entertainment at the Barrow-Civic Theatre with the Cabaret Lounge on Friday at 8 PM in the Little Theatre and Loren and Mark on Saturday at 7:30 PM on the main stage. The Nature Art Showcase will be held at the Barrow-Civic Theatre Lobby with a reception on Friday Night from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. (violinist Ellen Clarahan will perform from 6 to 8 p.m.) Valentine Shoppers who do not want to settle on the ordinary can find many new Valentine gift ideas in downtown Franklin’s charming independently owned shops.

On Saturday Chili lovers can sample and vote for their favorite Chili at the Chili Cook-Off from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 1255 Liberty Street. Area restaurants, delis and caterers will vie for the 1st place ribbon. Also on Saturday, The Franklin Fine Arts Council will sponsor Magic Shows at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 1255 Liberty Street. DeBence Antique Music World will offer special $5 tours. The Franklin Public Library will feature lots of fun activities for children and Neverending Stories have free Make & Take Penguin Pins for the kids from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Joyride Acoustic will perform from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Bossa Nova Café. Visitors can enjoy a great meal at one of the popular downtown restaurants and travel through the beautifully lit sculptures in Fountain Park.
